THIBODAUX, La. - Gavin Glanz had a career afternoon on the mound, but the Nicholls State Colonels struck in the ninth to top Oral Roberts University 2-1 in Thibodaux, La., on Sunday.
ORU dropped to 12-14 overall and 3-6 in Southland Conference play, while the Colonels improved their first place conference record to 7-2 and 15-14 overall.
Glanz pitched brilliantly through eight innings on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out a career high six batters. It was also his longest appearance as a Golden Eagles. Pepe Gomez (2-3) took the loss with two hits and an earned run in the bottom of the ninth.
Oklahoma native Brandon Jackson also went eight innings for the Colonels with six strikeouts. John Santriano earned the win after holding the Golden Eagles hitless in the top of the ninth.
Both teams combined for 10 hits at the plate, with Anthony Sequeira leading the Golden Eagles with two and Leo Vargas recording a pair to lead the Colonels. Pinch hitter Christian Correa had the game-winning hit for Nicholls in the bottom of the ninth.
For the third consecutive contest, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning for the third consecutive contest, with Logan Domenico scoring all three runs. Domenico drew a walk to start the ball game and scored on a single up the middle by Jose Trevino, his 19th RBI of the season.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Colonels tied the game at one. With runners on second and third, Keith Cormier hit a hard grounder to third. Brandon Healy made a diving grab and threw Cormier out at first, but Philip Lyons scored on the play.
The offensive struggles for both teams were carried into the bottom of the ninth when Tyler Duplantis drew a walk, David Zorn followed with a single to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Correa delivered the big hit with a single to left to plate Duplantis for the 2-1 win.
ORU will look to get back on track Wednesday evening as the Golden Eagles host Missouri State at J.L. Johnson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
