CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Oral Roberts University baseball team was unable to come back from a big Texas A&M-Corpus Christi inning on Friday evening as the Golden Eagles dropped game one of their Southland Conference series 7-2 to the Islanders.
The loss moved ORU to 9-10 in the conference and 22-19 overall, while the Islanders (24-19, 13-6) stay in a first place tie with Nicholls after Friday's league action.
Brandon Healy had a pair of singles in the game, as well as the lone run batted in for the Golden Eagles, and Matt Brandy picked up a couple of singles and scored once. Taking the loss for the Golden Eagles was Guillermo Trujillo (2-3) as he went 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits.
The Islanders' middle of the lineup had a big game with Tyler Ware leading the way with three hits, while Cody Stephens, Russell Vaughan and Kyle Danford each reached safely twice.
Matt Danton (6-2) went all nine innings in the start for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out five.
With runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings, the Islanders held on to a 6-0 over the Golden Eagles. In the bottom of the first, Frankie Salas singled through the left side to plate Jordan Lee, and Danford singled in the fourth to drive in Stephens.
In the home half of the fifth, Stephens singled to right field with one out to bring home Brandon Tierney and Ware to go up 4-0. The inning continued as Vaughan singled in Stephens and Vaughan later scored on a balk to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Golden Eagles got on the board with a couple of runs in the top of the seventh. Brandy, Joey Migliaccio and Anthony Sequeira earned three straight singles to start the inning. Brandy got the Golden Eagles on the board, scoring as the Golden Eagles grounded into a double play.
Migliaccio moved to third on the double play and scored on a single through the left side by Healy to make it a 6-2 game.
The Islanders added the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a Ware RBI bloop single to right to score Josh Garza to go up 7-2.
Tyler Boss and Brandon Tierney each had hitting streaks come to an end on Friday. Boss entered the game with a 12 game hitting streak, while Tierney had hit safely in 13 straight.
ORU looks to even the series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with game two set to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
