ORU and IPFW Battle in Final Road Series

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Oral Roberts baseball team makes its final Summit League road swing at IPFW as the three-game series schedule has been altered due to weather in the northern Indiana area. The teams will play a double-header Friday before closing out the series Saturday at Mastodon Field.

Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CST) with game two of the double-header to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion. Geoff Haxton will have the radio call on 1550 AM in the Tulsa area and around the world for free online and on mobile devices at ORUAthletics.com.

OUT OF THE BOX

• The Golden Eagles make their final Summit League road trip against IPFW in search of a season sweep. It would be the second straight season sweep for ORU after taking all six games from Omaha with a sweep last weekend against the Mavericks.

• After playing 17 of the final 25 games on the road the Golden Eagles are 15-5 on the road this season. The road record for ORU ranks seventh best in the nation with Illinois leading the country at 17-2 in road games followed by LSU at 11-2. The 15 road wins are tied for second most behind Illinois with Charleston, Missouri State and Mercer all with 15 road wins this season. 

• ORU has won four straight since losing back-to-back games against South Dakota State. The Golden Eagles have lost back-to-back games three times this season, however in the last 26 games ORU is 22-4 during that stretch with six run rule victories.

• Offensively, the Golden Eagles are one of the best in the nation with a .321 batting average ranking second best in the country behind Morehead State who is hitting at a .336 clip.  Eleven of the Golden Eagles regular nine starters all carry a batting average above .300 and led by Matt Whatley's .350 average - fourth best in the Summit League.

• The Golden Eagles on base percentage of .409 also ranks sixth best in NCAA this season.  ORU has eight players with an on base percentage above the .400 mark, which is also led by Whatley's .447 mark which is second best in the Summit League. 

• With six run rule victories this season, ORU is the 11th highest scoring team in the country averaging 7.4 runs per game. Morehead State leads the country at 8.6 runs per game.

• With six run rule victories this season, ORU is the 11th highest scoring team in the country averaging 7.4 runs per game. Individually, four Golden Eagles rank in the top 10 of the Summit League led by Whatley's 43 runs which is third best and ranks 78th nationally. Matt Brandy (41), Derrian James (41) and Anthony Sequeira (38) round out the individuals ranked in the top 10.

• The pitching staff continues to hold its own with Guillermo Trujillo (7) and Xavier Altamirano (6) ranked first and second in the Summit League. Altamirano is second in the conference with 66 strikeouts and ranks 42nd in NCAA with a 5.08 strikeout-to-walk ratio totaling just 13 walks to 66 strikeouts. 

• Anthony Sequeira has been one of the best relievers in the country with a 1.11 ERA in 24.1 innings. He also has 32 strikeouts and just five walks with seven saves.

 

UP NEXT FOR ORU

ORU heads to Wichita State Tuesday in the only meeting between the two teams this season. The Golden Eagles and Shockers first meeting scheduled in mid-February was cancelled due to winter weather. First pitch from Eck Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
