Golden Eagles Fall in Series Opener to IPFW

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts baseball dropped its series opener to Summit League foe IPFW, 6-3, Friday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium. It marked the first win for the Mastodons in Tulsa since 2011.

Fort Wayne (10-11, 1-3 SL) came into the weekend series 0-3 in League play after dropping their first three conference games to Omaha a week ago. The Mastodons started the game with a sense of urgency, scoring a pair of runs in the first three innings to go on top, 2-0.

The Golden Eagles (11-10, 2-2 SL) answered though with a trio of runs in the bottom half of the third to take their first lead of the game, after RBI singles from both Brent Williams and Noah Cummings. 

The lead would not last as IPFW scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings on their way to victory. Four Mastodons tallied multiple hits on the night while leadoff man Brandon Soat finished 2-for-3 with two hits, two walks and three runs scored to lead the visitors. 

Sophomore Bryce Howe (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs, only two of which were earned in four and a third innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked three in the outing. Billy Lovvorn tossed two and two thirds scoreless innings in relief, striking out three. Josh McMinn struck out four out of the bullpen. 

Evan Miller earned the victory for the Mastodons, improving to 3-1 on the year after tossing six complete innings and striking out nine. Jake Weber picked up his fourth save after retiring ORU in order in the ninth. 

Notables

  • IPFW won its first game in Tulsa since 2011 Friday and broke the Golden Eagles' eight-game win streak against them. 
  • The Dons outhit ORU 12-5 on the night. 
  • ORU did not record a hit from the third inning to the seventh. Matt Whatley's double to left broke the streak. 
  • Rolando Martinez extended his reached base streak to 12 games after drawing a walk in the first. 
  • ORU pitchers set a new season high in strikeouts, retiring 14 Mastodons with K's on the night.
  • No Golden Eagle player recorded multiple hits, but ORU did draw eight walks. 

Up Next
The Golden Eagles will conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium. ORU Athletics will also have an Easter Egg Hunt throughout the stadium during game one. Game two will follow approximately 30 minutes after game one.
