TULSA, Okla. - A three-run seventh inning powered the Oral Roberts baseball team to a 6-4 series-opening win over Omaha Friday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium. With the victory, ORU moves two games ahead of the Mavericks in the Summit League Standings.

The Golden Eagles (21-12, 10-3) trailed in the game all the way until sophomore Matt Whatley connected on the first pitch he saw and sent it down the left field line for a bases-clearing double to put ORU on top for good at 6-4.

Redshirt senior Trevin Sonnier led off the inning with a double to center field to become the first leadoff base runner of the night for ORU. Chase Stafford drew a walk and Nick Rotola singled to load the bases for Oral Roberts.

Omaha (17-17, 8-5) jumped out to a quick lead as the Mavericks took advantage of defensive miscues to start the game, scoring a pair of unearned runs. UNO would add to its lead in the fourth after Riley Herold singled and eventually scored on an Alex Schultz double to push the lead to 3-0.

Oral Roberts answered in the fifth when Stafford belted his third home run of the season to pull the Golden Eagles within one.

The Mavericks took advantage of a fielding error in the sixth inning on a bunted ball back to the mound. UNO's Jack Kalina chopped a ball over third base to score the leadoff man for the Mavs and extend their lead to 4-2.

ORU answered in the bottom half of the inning as hot-hitting junior Brent Williams collected his team-leading sixth home run of the year on a ball hit into the ORU bullpen.

Sophomore Cale Tims gathered his fourth win of the year in relief as he pitched two innings and did not allow a run. Hard-throwing closer Brady Womacks struck out three batters in two innings as he collected his sixth save of the season.

Claremore, Oklahoma native Bryce Howe got the start for the Golden Eagles, tossing five innings and allowing only one earned run on the night in the no decision. The right-hander struck out six batters in the first two frames, but defensive miscues allowed a pair of runs.
