Golden Eagles Win Streak Comes to an End at Omaha, 10-4

OMAHA, Neb. – Oral Roberts' saw its seven game winning-streak snapped Thursday afternoon in Omaha as the Mavericks defeated the ORU, 10-4. It marked the first win in program history over ORU for the Mavs who came into the matchup 0-9 all-time. 

It was a slugfest from beginning to end for the Mavericks (27-25, 17-11) who struck for 16 base hits on the day, the third most hits against ORU this season. Omaha's Clayton Taylor led off the game with a home run to right-center field to put the home club on top.

Oral Roberts (33-17, 21-7) was able to come back in the second with a pair of runs of their own to regain the lead. Brent Williams lead off the inning with a double before freshman Trevor McCutchin recorded his first career triple to drive him home. Trevin Sonnier would add the second run on a single to center which plated Trent Shelton from second to give ORU a 2-1 lead. 

The Golden Eagles added one more run in the third when Noah Cummings drove in his 37th run of the year, scoring Nick Rotola who beat out an infield single to start the frame. 

That was when the Omaha bats came to life. The Mavs scored nine runs in the next three innings to take a commanding lead. ORU added a run in the fifth when Rotola made his way home from third on a wild pitch. 

Tyler Fox became Omaha's winningest pitcher in program history as he recorded his 30th win in four years at UNO. He improved to 10-2 on the year after going five complete innings, giving up four runs and striking out three. 

Sophomore Bryce Howe (5-4) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs in three and a third innings. Josh McMinn, Billy Lovvorn and Korbin Polly pitched the final three and two-third innings of the game. McMinn was charged with four earned runs while Lovvorn and Polly did not allow a run in their outings. 

Rotola and Williams led the Golden Eagles at the plate. Rotola finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a runs scored. 

Notables

  • The Golden Eagles dropped their first ever game to the Mavericks and now hold a 9-1 lead in the all-time series. 
  • The Mavs' 16 hits marked the third most hits given up by Oral Roberts this season.
  • Five Omaha players finished with multiple hits led by Ryan Cate who finished with four. 
  • ORU stranded eight runners on base in the game. Omaha left 11 runners on base. 
  • Omaha had a baserunner in every inning but the second.
