TULSA, Okla. – Former Oral Roberts pitcher Jordan Romano was named to Team Italy for the 2017 World Baseball Classic as revealed Wednesday on MLB.com and MLB Network.
Romano, selected in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft by his hometown Toronto Blue Jays, made 15 appearances for the Lansing Lugnuts, the Class A affiliate for Toronto, in 2016 finishing with a 3-2 record.
A native of Markham, Ontario, he started his professional career in 2014 with the Toronto organization's rookie team, the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays, before moving to the Bluefield Blue Jays, an advanced rookie team, that same season.
The right hander spent the spring in 2014 as the Golden Eagles' closer totaling 11 saves in 29 appearances. He posted a 3-4 record in 40.2 innings of work in his lone season at ORU striking out 49 batters.
Team Italy will be managed by Marco Mazzieri, a European scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza.
The 16-team event runs from March 6-22 with first round games scheduled for March 6-13 in Seoul, South Korea, Tokyo, Japan, Miami, Florida, and Jalisco, Mexico. Second round play is slated for March 12-19 in Tokyo, Japan, and San Diego, California, with the championship round taking place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, March 20-22.
The Italians open the WBC March 9 in Pool D against Mexico and also will face Puerto Rico and Venezuela in its pool.
