TULSA, Okla. – After winning back-to-back Summit League Triple Crown titles, Oral Roberts junior Spencer Henson was selected by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the 2019 Major League Baseball First Year Draft Tuesday.
The Pryor, Oklahoma, native was the 285th overall selection following another brilliant campaign with the Golden Eagles in 2019 earning the distinction of Summit League Player of the Year. The first baseman led the conference in nearly every offensive category behind a .362 batting average, 19 home runs, 51 RBI, 46 runs scored and 51 walks. His 19 home runs was eighth in ORU single-season history.
Henson's .768 slugging percentage ranks fifth in the nation and was the tops in the league by more than 200 points, while he also is in the top 10 in the NCAA in walks per game, on-base percentage and home runs per game.
He is the only player in Summit League history to win the Triple Crown twice in a career and landed on the All-Summit League First Team in 2018 and 2019 for his efforts.
Henson is the 43rd player in Golden Eagles baseball history to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft. ORU has had at least one player taken in the MLB Draft every year since 1995 and in all but one of the last 43 years dating back to 1977.
