Glover Earns All-Southland Accolades

FRISCO, Texas - Senior Shawn Glover was named to the 2013-14 preseason All-Southland Conference first team, it was announced on Wednesday by the league office.

Glover and Northwestern State's DeQuan Hicks were automatic selections to the first team as the only two returners from last year's all-conference squads.

Both Hicks and Glover were both second-team selections a season ago and guided their teams to the postseason. Hicks was selected to the all-tournament team after the Demons beat Stephen F. Austin to make their third trip to the NCAA tournament, while Glover helped the Golden Eagles reach the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

They are joined on the first team by Northwestern State sophomore guard Jalan West, Stephen F. Austin senior guard Desmond Haymon and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior guard John Jordan.

The second-team preseason all-conference squad consists of McNeese State forward Desharick Guidry and guard Kevin Hardy, Sam Houston State forward James Thomas, Nicholls guard Dantrell Thomas and SFA forward Jacob Parker.

Glover was the Golden Eagles' third leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. He scored at least 10 points in 24 games, including 14 of his last 16 games, and started 33 of the team's 35 games. He scored a season-high 28 points at Northwestern State and had a string of three consecutive 20-point games in late January.

A record 14 teams will compete in the Southland this season with the additions of Houston Baptist, New Orleans, Abilene Christian and UIW, though the two latter teams will not play a full conference schedule this season or be eligible for postseason play until 2017-18. The 51st season of Southland Conference basketball begins Friday, Nov. 8 when eight teams hit the hardwood. Southland Conference doesn't start until Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. The Southland tournament returns to the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas for the seventh consecutive season, March 12-15.
