Torgerson, Lee, Named to Academic All-League Teams

ELMHURST, Ill. – With the conclusion of the 2016 Summit League Golf Championships, The Summit League has announced its Academic All-League Teams as voted on by a panel of each institution's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.  The student-athletes named to the teams were honored for their academic and athletic performances this season.

The men's team was represented by six student-athletes with Fort Wayne leading the way with a pair of selections in Jacob Groninger and Devin Jenkins. IUPUI's Jackson Juerling, Oral Roberts' Trevor Torgerson, South Dakota State's Grant Smith and Western Illinois' Andrew Blackburn were also named to the team.

Torgerson finished fifth at The Summit League Championship earlier this month and ended the year with a 75.33 stroke average. The senior has a perfect. 4.00 GPA as a biology major. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and was one of three males named to the ORU Ultimate Whole Person Champion Team for 2015-16. 

Groninger, a management and marketing major with a 3.46 grade-point average (GPA), finished the season with a career-low 74.73 average and a pair of top-three finishes. A 2014 academic all-league honoree, he was named to the All-Summit League Second Team at the end of the year. Jenkins has a 3.54 GPA as a finance major. The junior finished the season with a 76.78 stroke average, which ranked fourth on the Mastodon squad.

Juerling is a sophomore with a 3.68 GPA majoring in management and marketing. He completed the season with a 76.81 stroke average and placed in a tie for seventh at the league championship with a 221 (74-73-74).

Smith, a mathematics major with a 3.65 GPA, concluded the season with the second-lowest average in the league at 73.72 and helped lead the Jackrabbits to their first league title and NCAA Regional berth. A first team all-league performer, the senior had a pair of top-five finishes this season.

Blackburn is an economics major with a 3.53 GPA. The junior was named Second Team All-Summit League and ended the year with a 74.81 average and five top-five finishes.

The five selections on the women's team were led by the Denver duo of Jessica Carty and Jessica Dreesbeimdieke. Fort Wayne's Brenna Sherwood, Omaha's Katie Kesti and Oral Roberts' Shinwoo Lee rounded out the team. 

Lee, a second team all-league honoree, led Oral Roberts with a 76.72 average and placed 15th at the league tournament. The senior has a 3.69 GPA in international business.

Carty captured individual medalist honors at the league championship and led Denver with a 76.10 stroke average on the year, which ranked fourth in the league. The junior was named to the all-league second team and has a 3.41 GPA as a psychology major. Dreesbeimdieke, a psychology major with a 3.99 GPA, placed third at the league championship, which was her highest finish on the year, en route to being named to the all-tournament team. A sophomore, she ended the season with a 76.87 average.

Sherwood, who earned her third consecutive academic all-league team honor, has a 3.98 GPA in accounting and finance. Her 81.65 season stroke average ranks third-lowest in program history and she set a new school record with four top-10 individual finishes.

Kesti, a neuroscience major with a 3.95 GPA, captured her second career academic all-league team selection (2014). The senior led her Maverick team in scoring average (80.80) for the second time in her career and finished her four-year career as the school leader in all-time rounds played (102).

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.  The men's and women's golf academic all-league teams are made up of the five student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
