TULSA, Okla. – For the second year in a row, Oral Roberts golfer Cody Burrows has finished as the runner-up at the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.
Burrows topped Arkansas All-American and 2017 NCAA individual runner-up Mason Overstreet in the semifinals to earn his spot back in the finals. In the semifinals, Burrows fell behind after a bogey on the third hole, but bounced back taking advantage of his opponent's miscue on 8 and then using birdies on 11 and 16 to grab a two shot lead with two holes to play. Overstreet got one shot back on 17 but both golfers parred 18 to give Burrows the Victory.
Facing Oklahoma State sophomore Brendon Jelley in the finals, Burrows fell behind early again and was unable to climb back in. On the verge of elimination, Burrows got a birdie on 14 to stay alive but both golfers earned a par on 15 to give Jelley the match 4 and 3.
Prior to his work at the OGA Championship, Burrows also carded a top 15 finish at the Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship at Prairie Dunes, a tournament that is widely regarded as a top 10 amateur tournament in the world. Burrows also took third at the OGA Stroke Play Championship at Muskogee Country Club earlier in July.
Burrows was tabbed as the Summit League Golfer of the Year following his sophomore season in which he led the league in scoring with a 72.43 scoring average. He placed third at the league championship and had 11 rounds of par or better this season while earning a trio of top five finishes.
