FARGO, N.D. – Oral Roberts junior Jaden Purnell shined for the track and field team Friday winning the long jump on day one of the 2018 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Facility.

 

On his final attempt of the event, Purnell set a personal best and vaulted from third place into a conference championship at 7.51 meters. His victory gave ORU 10 team points.

 

The sprinters for the Golden Eagles were magnificent in the preliminary rounds Friday dominating the field and setting up the opportunity for a big day in the finals tomorrow. The women are sending three into the finals of the 60 meter dash and had four of the top five times in the 200 meter dash, while the men also have three in the 60 meter dash and hold five of the eight spots in Saturday's final of the 200 meter dash.

 

News & Notes
- Purnell shattered his previous best in the indoor long jump by nearly 10 inches. He is the 190th all-time individual champion in ORU track and field history.

 

- Freshman Aniekeme Etim set a Summit League Championship record of 7.46 seconds in the 60 meter dash in her first action of the day. She entered the weekend leading the conference in both the 60 and 200 meter dash and did not disappoint in the preliminary round posting the fastest times in each event.

 

- Three men's pole vaulters picked up team points led by Matt Owen's fifth-place effort. Christian Patterson and Tommy Dial also finished in the top eight for the Golden Eagles.

 

- North Dakota State leads the men's team standings with 62 points after five events with ORU sitting fourth with 21 points.

 

- North Dakota State also has the team lead on the women's side with 86 points through five scored events and the Golden Eagles are currently fourth with 11 points.
