TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team announced its 2018 schedule showcasing six opponents that reached the postseason a year ago with four at the NCAA Championship. The 28-match campaign features four non-conference tournaments to begin the year and eight home contests played at Kenneth H. Cooper Aerobics Center.
The Golden Eagles reached the postseason for the first time since 2006 with an appearance in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship and will face a challenging schedule again this season taking on four opponents that ended 2017 ranked in the top 75 of the RPI.
Under the direction of Head Coach Sheera Sirola, who enters her 16th year leading the program, ORU opens with a trek to the Rumble in the Rockies Aug. 24-25 hosted by Wyoming. The opening match is slated against the Buffaloes of Colorado, a team that reached the final 16 of the NCAA Championship in 2017, before matchups against Wyoming and North Florida.
The Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational follows Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 at Missouri State featuring Ball State and Grambling State, while a non-conference tournament across town at Tulsa Sept. 7-8 will put ORU against former league foes Northwestern State and Abilene Christian. A premiere Saturday night contest with the Golden Hurricane caps the weekend.
The Golden Eagles travel to Edwardsville, Illinois, for the final non-conference tournament at SIUE Sept. 14-15 and will battle Louisiana Tech and Northern Kentucky before meeting the host Cougars.
After finishing second place in the regular season standings and reaching The Summit League Championship finals in 2017, ORU begins the league slate at home against four-time defending champion Denver Sept. 21. After the Friday night match with the Pioneers, the Golden Eagles host South Dakota Sept. 23 before hitting the road for their next three matches.
The road swing opens against conference newcomer North Dakota, who has reached the NCAA Championship the last two years from the Big Sky Conference, and continues at newly rebranded Purdue Fort Wayne (Oct. 5) and Western Illinois (Oct. 7).
The regular season comes to a close with the Golden Eagles playing four of their final six matches at home ending with North Dakota State (Nov. 9) and Omaha (Nov. 11). The 2018 Summit League Volleyball Championship is scheduled for Nov. 16-18 at Hamilton Arena in Denver, Colorado.
