STILLWATER, Okla.
The Oral Roberts University women's soccer team fell to
Xavier, 5-1, in the second round of the Oklahoma State
Invitational, at Cowgirl Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, ORU
fell to 1-3-0 on the 2007 season while Xavier improved to
1-4-0.
Xavier grabbed an
early lead when Allison Osborne received a pass from Ali Nellis in
the box and headed the ball past goalkeeper Stef
Gurley in the eighth minute. Jillian Chuck was also credited
with an assist.
The Musketeers
stretched their lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute on a goal
from Karin Martini.
The Golden Eagles cut
into the Musketeer lead early in the second half. Marissa
Ranberger received a nice pass from Emily
Gagnon and blasted it past XU's goalkeeper Kelly Farrell,
making it a 2-1 ball game. Ranberger's goal came at the 45:42 mark
and was the forward's first goal this season.
Xavier increased
their lead to 3-1 in the 53rd minute with a goal by
Carylanne Wenzel. The Musketeers added two more insurance goals
stretching their lead to 5-1.
The goalkeeping
tandem of Stef Gurley and Amanda
Wheeler saw equal time in the net for the Golden Eagles. Gurley
played the first half, recording one save while facing eight shots.
Wheeler took over for Gurley at the beginning of the second half
and made two saves.
Farrell had four
saves in a winning effort for the Musketeers while XU held a 21-15
advantage in shots.
Gagnon and Anna
Bickers were honored on the all-tournament team for their
efforts.
ORU returns to action
on Wednesday, hosting Oklahoma City on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
