TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University fought off a ninth inning Houston Baptist rally on Thursday night as Jose Trevino and the Golden Eagles walked off the Huskies in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 victory at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
ORU evened its Southland Conference record with the win, moving to 8-8 this season in league play and 20-17 overall. HBU dropped to 16-18 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
Tyler Boss had a big day at the plate, going 3-4 with a double and one run scored. In 22 games since the beginning of conference play, Boss is hitting .392 and scored a team high 18 times.
Trevino was the only other Golden Eagle finishing with multiple hits, with a double and the RBI single to end the game.
The Golden Eagles sent four pitchers to the mound in the game, with Jordan Romano (2-2) recording his second victory of the season. Romano pitched two innings, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out five.
For the Huskies, Curtis Jones and Josh Martinez combined for seven of HBU's ten hits, as Jones reached safely on four hits and Martinez had three. Dylan Zarosky (2-1) entered the game in the ninth inning and allowed a run on two hits to take the loss.
In the top half of the third inning, Jones singled through the right side to drive home Mike Chamberlain from second to make it 3-1.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Matt Brandy RBI single to center that scored Logan Domenico to make it a 4-1 game. Yet again, the Huskies answered in the next half inning as Samm Wiggins delivered a pinch hit sacrifice fly to deep center, with the bases loaded, to score Jordan McCoy to cut the ORU lead to 4-2.
ORU picked up what looked to be an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Trevino scored on an Anthony Sequeira fielder's choice, making it a 5-2 game.
Defensive struggles cost the Golden Eagles in the top of the ninth. With one out and runners on second and third, McCoy hit a comebacker to Romano, reaching on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Jones to score from third. Zach Nehrir then hit a grounder to short that drove in Christian Conikos, making it a 5-4 game.
Martinez then laid down a bunt with McCoy standing on third. The throw home wasn't in time and the Huskies tied the game at five.
Fortunately, the Golden Eagles fought back in the bottom of the ninth. Graham McIntyre started the inning with a single to center and moved around to third on a Healy sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. On a 1-2 count with two outs, Trevino hit a grounder back up the middle and beat the throw at first to bring home McIntyre as the winning run.
The 6-5 walk off victory was the first walk off of the season by the Golden Eagles.
ORU will go for its second straight SLC series victory on Friday as they face off with the Huskies in game two. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
