ORU wrangles No. 9 Cowboys, 15-8, in front of sell-out crowd

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University baseball used nine unanswered runs on Tuesday night to knock off No. 9 Oklahoma State 15-8 in front of a sell-out crowd at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

ORU (22-18) made it four straight victories against Big 12 member schools with the victory over the Cowboys, and has three straight against nationally ranked teams this season. OSU dropped to 29-12 with the loss. The Golden Eagles have won five of their last six games against the Cowboys.

The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd with 2,418 fans in attendance, the largest crowd at J.L. Johnson Stadium since March 23, 2004, against Oklahoma.

Tyler Boss and Matt Brandy led the Golden Eagles with three runs batted in. Jose Trevino recorded three hits, including two doubles in the game, while Anthony Sequeira had three hits, scoring twice and driving in one run.

The Golden Eagles used seven pitchers in the contest with Denny Clement (1-0) earning the win in 1.1 innings of work, without allowing a hit. Clement, Jacob McDavid, Jacob Teague and Colin Hightower combined to hold the Cowboy offense hitless in the final 4.1 innings.

OSU used a balance offense as nine different Cowboys picked up hits in the game, with Zach Fish and Gage Green leading the way with two hits apiece. Fish jumped started a three-run inning in the fifth with his eighth home run of the year.

Alex Hackerott was one of six pitchers the Cowboys ran to the mound. Hackerott took the loss as he allowed five runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Both squads traded punches in the first inning with a run each. Donnie Walton crossed the plate for the Cowboys as he doubled and scored on a single by Green. In the bottom of the inning, Boss drove in Logan Domenico on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one.

The Golden Eagles had the first of two five-run innings in the bottom of the second, aided by three Cowboy errors. After Joey Migliaccio scored on a throwing error by the OSU pitcher, Brandon Healy followed with a two-run double down the right field line to plate Sequeira and Audie Afenir, making it a 4-1 game.

With the bases loaded and one out, Boss earned his second RBI on another sacrifice fly, allowing Healy to score from third. In the next at bat, the Golden Eagles attempted a double steal and the throw down to third went in to left field, allowing Emmanuel Forcier to score to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 6-1 after three innings.

OSU cut into the Golden Eagle lead with four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single to center by Tim Arakawa that cut the lead to 6-5.

Following the Fish home to start the fifth inning, Hunter Hagler singled to center to drive in Dustin Williams and Robie Rojas to give the Cowboys a 8-6 lead.

The Golden Eagles answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners, Austen Colt hit a chopper to third, that drove in Afenir. Domenico followed and cleared the bases with a two-run double over the centerfielder's head, helping the Golden Eagles retake a 9-8 lead.

The inning continued as Trevino doubled into the left field corner to drive home Domenico, and Brandy singled up the middle to score Trevino to extend the lead to 11-8.

ORU added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh behind an RBI single by Boss, a two-run single by Brandy and an RBI single from Sequeira to seal the 15-8 output.

ORU continues its conference schedule on Friday as the Golden Eagles travel to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the first of three games against the Southland Conference co-leaders. First pitch for the Friday and Saturday contests is set for 7 p.m., with the finale beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
