STILLWATER, Okla. - Free passes doomed the Oral Roberts University baseball team on Tuesday night as the Golden Eagles dropped their final non-conference game of the season at No. 6 Oklahoma State, 8-3.
ORU dropped to 29-24 on the season, while the Cowboys split the season series with the Golden Eagles and moved to 39-15.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Jose Trevino who had three of ORU's five singles, while Logan Domenico and Matt Brandy each picked up a single. Kyle Stout (1-1) was credited with the loss for the Golden Eagles in just a third of an inning pitch, allowing three runs.
ORU pitching allowed 14 free passes in the contest, and walked in five runs in the game.
Three Cowboys had multiple hits in the contest with Saulyer Saxon, Donnie Walton and Gage Green each reaching on two hits. Saxon and Green each drove in two runs apiece. Garrett Williams (4-0) allowed one hit in two innings for his fourth win of the season.
The Golden Eagles continued their trend of scoring first against the Cowboys, plating a pair of runs with the help of the OSU defense. Following a single from Trevino, Tyler Boss hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped, allowing Trevino to score from first.
Boss crossed the plate later in the inning to make it 2-0 as the next three Golden Eagles drew free passes, culminated with an Audie Afenir walk with the bases loaded.
OSU got a run back in the home of the first as Green doubled to right field to drive in Walton to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the top of the second inning, Emmanuel Forcier hit a sinking liner that went off the glove of the Cowboy leftfielder and went all the way to the wall. Forcier used his speed to turn the error into a run, touching them all to extend the lead to 3-1.
However, the Cowboys put seven unanswered runs in the scoreboard, starting in the bottom of the fourth. OSU tied the game at three in the fourth as Saxon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Walton followed and drew a four-pitch walk.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cowboys broke open the game with five runs. After single up the middle by Saxon to drive in Tim Arakawa to take the lead, Green hit a slow roller up the first base line for an infield single, making it a 5-3 game.
With the bases loaded, Arakawa, Conor Costello and Craig McConaughy drew three straight walks to push in three runs to extend the Cowboy lead to 8-3.
OSU closer Brendan McCurry entered the game in a non-save situation and sat the Golden Eagles down in order to end the game.
ORU will close the regular season at home as the Golden Eagles host Lamar in the final Southland Conference series of the season. Both teams enter the final weekend in a three-way tie with Central Arkansas for seventh in the league. First pitch of the series is set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
