TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts baseball team completed a weekend sweep to start Summit League play taking down Purdue Fort Wayne 7-5 Sunday afternoon from J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Sam Rainwater pitched 3.2 innings in long relief earning the first win of his Golden Eagles career. Drew Lowe lifted a two-run home run to left breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning and the bullpen preserved the lead to secure a perfect start to conference play.
ORU tallied the eventual winning run in the sixth inning as Lowe led the frame on a walk and moved into scoring position as Alex Schmitz dropped a sacrifice bunt. Anthony Martinez drove in the run sending a one-out single back up the middle allowing Lowe to score from second.
The Mastodons threatened in the top of the eighth taking advantage of an ORU error with the bases loaded after two free passes, but Spencer Henson closed out the game for a four-out save.
After the Golden Eagles erased a three-run deficit in the third, the home side took their first lead of the day on Lowe's long ball. Hunter Swift battled back from a 0-2 count watching four-straight balls miss the strike zone for a lead-off walk. Lowe fell behind 0-2, but was able to foul off three pitches before sending a towering homer to left.
Quote of the Day
"We needed some help out of the pen today and I thought Sam Rainwater did that for us in the middle of the game. It was a little rough early, but Sammy helped us hang in there and gave us a chance. I thought Trevor McCutchin and Spencer Henson both did some good work as well, so good to see some guys get out there in tight spots and tight situations and have success." – Head Coach Ryan Folmar
