BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Oral Roberts baseball team officially claimed a 5-3 victory over South Dakota State in a game called due to unplayable field conditions Saturday after five innings at Erv Huether Field.
The Golden Eagles jumped to a 5-0 lead scoring twice in the opening frame before a three-run second inning. Isaac Coffey hit a RBI double to put ORU on the board and Andrew Pace followed by sending a RBI single to center in the first inning and Spencer Henson's two-run home run capped the second.
The Jackrabbits scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to cut the margin down to 5-3. SDSU was able to put the potential tying run on base before reliever AJ Archambo forced an inning-ending double play to stop the rally.
ORU went on to score four times in the top of the sixth before the game was suspended due to rain with one out in the bottom half of the frame. Since the inning was not fully completed, the score reverted back to the last inning officially in the books giving the Golden Eagles a series split winning 5-3.
Already holding a 2-0 lead, the Golden Eagles struck for three unearned runs in the second inning thanks to a pair of SDSU errors that extended the frame. Blake Hall led with a single and came around to score on a two-out throwing error. Henson made the Jackrabbits pay for the extra out as he hit a towering home run to left that stretched the ORU advantage to 5-0.
Inside the Box Score
- Hunter Wilson started the charge totaling two hits, while adding a RBI and a run scored, as he was the only ORU player with multiple hits. Pace continued his impressive weekend posting a RBI with two outs and has now reached base safely in each of his last 37 games.
- Henson blasted his Summit League-best 15th home run of the year in the second and finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
- Matt Gaskins tossed 4.1 innings picking up the victory as he gave up three runs on six hits and struck out three. The junior was able to work out of a tough spot early stranding two in scoring position in the second and the bases loaded in the third.
- Archambo needed only two pitches forcing an inning-ending double play to the only batter he faced with two SDSU runners on in the fifth and the go-ahead run at the plate. The sophomore registered the first save of his collegiate career.
With Sunday's series finale officially cancelled, ORU turns to a mid-week test against Wichita State Tuesday night in its final home game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. live on ESPN+ and KGEB TV-53/CoxHD.
