TULSA, Okla. - After a five season hiatus, a rivalry will be renewed at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium as the Oral Roberts University men's soccer team makes a seven mile trek to face Tulsa on Tuesday. Kickoff between the Golden Eagles and the Hurricane is set for 7 p.m.
ORU (2-0-1) is off to its best three-match start since 2004, most recently finishing in a 1-1 draw at Houston Baptist on September 5, before notching a 2-1 victory two days later at Incarnate Word.
A big part of the hot start for the Golden Eagles is the play of goalkeeper Ben LaCourse. The sophomore has pulled in 19 saves, including a career high nine against HBU. LaCourse is 16th in the country with a .905 save percentage.
LaCourse and the ORU defense have allowed only three goals this season, leading the Summit League as a team in goals against average at 0.59.
Johnny Chavez leads the Golden Eagles offensively with two goals, including a golden goal in the regular season opener against Missouri State. Alex White is third in the league and leads ORU with two assists.
Much like ORU, which has played two double-overtime matches in its first three matches of the season, Tulsa (2-2-1) has had four of five matches go into extra-time, including three into double-overtime. The Hurricane's draw came on Saturday as they finished tied with No. 2 Creighton, 1-1.
Senior forward Akeil Barrett, who delivered the game-tying goal against Creighton, leads Tulsa with three goals. Barrett and junior defender Bradley Bourgeois were named the preseason All-American Athletic Conference team.
TU was tabbed to finish third in the AAC behind Connecticut and South Florida who were picked first and second, respectively.
The match marks the first time the two programs will face off since the 2008 season. ORU is 2-16 all-time against Tulsa.
