TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts University men's soccer team kicks off its 2014 Summit League slate on Saturday as the Golden Eagles are set to take on defending champion Denver on the road. Kickoff in Denver, Colorado, is set for 8 p.m. CST.
ORU (3-2-1) enters conference play above .500 for the first time since 2005 when the Golden Eagles kicked off league action with an identical 3-2-1 record.
The Golden Eagles picked up their third win of the season on Monday with a 4-3 overtime victory against Houston Baptist. Johnny Chavez scored two goals in the match and added an assist on the golden goal by Tarik Salkicic in the 98th minute.
Chavez is second in the conference with four goals, one behind Denver's Eric Kronenberg, and leads the league with nine points. Alex White, who earned an assist on Chavez's first goal against HBU, is second in the league with three assists.
DU (5-3-0) is receiving votes in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25. Last weekend, the Pioneers dropped a match at Utah Valley 2-1 on September 19, before returning home for a 2-1 win over Portland on Sunday.
The Pioneers lead the conference with 14 goals scored on the season. Joining Kronenberg as multi-goal scorers are senior forwards Teddy Mullin with three goals and Kosta Kordistos with two goals.
Goalkeepers Oliver Brown (3-1-0) and Ryan Massey (1-2-0) have split time between the posts, with Massey playing six more minutes that Brown. Both players have each recorded eight saves on the season.
The Golden Eagles are winless in five previous meetings against the Pioneers, dating back to the first meeting on October 30, 1993.
