TULSA, Okla. – Matthew Rogers played hero for the Oral Roberts men's soccer team Thursday night at the Case Soccer Complex as he netted the game-winning penalty kick in double overtime to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 victory over UC Irvine.

The Anteaters (1-3-2) came into the match receiving votes in several national polls but were held at bay for most of the match by the ORU backline defenders of Arturo Rodriguez, Tarik Nicholls, Alex White and Baptiste Vandeputte. ORU goalkeeper Ben LaCourse also finished with seven saves on the night.

ORU outshot UC Irvine 11-5 in the first half, but neither team was able to get anything in the opening period as both teams put quality shot on net throughout.

50 minutes into the match, freshman forward Alexis Derennes put the Golden Eagles on top with a flashy finish in the box after being setup by Anthony Maoirano. It was his second goal of the season.

UC Irvine answered just before the end of regulation with a goal of their own to tie the match at one as Ivan Canales put a ball in the back of the net off a deflection from 10-yards out.

With Roger's PK to end the match after the Golden Eagles drew a foul inside the box, ORU won its first overtime match of the season.
