Men's Soccer Begins League Play Defeating Eastern Illinois, 2-1

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Oral Roberts men's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Eastern Illinois 2-1 in double overtime to begin Summit League action Saturday afternoon at Lakeside Stadium. 

Freshman Tarik Nicholls scored the game-winning goal just second into the second overtime period to give the Golden Eagles the win. The Port-of-Spain, Trinidad native dribble through the Panthers defense and put his only shot of the match past EIU's Matt Novotny. 

ORU (3-3-1) fell behind in the first half after Eastern Illinois' season goals leader was awarded a penalty kick that beat ORU goalkeeper Ben LaCourse. ORU would not falter though, as Matthew Rogers came up with a penalty kick goal of his own in the 66th minute of play to tie the match. 

Turning Point
Eastern Illinois (2-5) had a chance to go up 2-0 in the second half after Brendan McDonough was awarded a PK in the 56th minute. LaCourse saved the attempt while energizing his team. 

Inside the Box Score

  • ORU outshot Eastern Illinois 17-8 on the day while putting nine shots on the net compared to the home teams just four attempts on net. 
  • The match marked the fourth double overtime contest of the season and the second consecutive double overtime win for the Golden Eagles. ORU improved to 2-1-1 in such matches. 
  • The Golden Eagles won the corner kick battle 9-3 over EIU, but ORU was called for three offsides in the match. 
  • Ben LaCourse made three saves in the match. The Golden Eagles were called for 16 fouls on the day including three yellow cards as well as a red card. Juan Diego Padilla was sent off in the 59th after picking up a red card. 
  • Rogers led the squad with three shots while Davis Chimento and Alexis Derennes each had two shots.

The team will head to Dallas, Texas Tuesday, Sept. 29 to take on SMU. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
