DENVER – In fitting fashion, senior Tyler Hill pushed the Oral Roberts men's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Omaha Thursday night at CIBER Field in the Summit League Championships semifinals.
With 5:12 remaining in the second overtime period, the Broken Arrow, Okla. native slipped a ball past the Maverick defense from the top of the box and finished in the top-left corner to secure the Golden Eagles spot in the finals Saturday.
The Golden Eagles opened the match aggressive on offense, striking for shots early on UNO goalkeeper Josh Christensen, who came into the match at 5-1-1 on the year.
The Mavs made their opportunities count though as Michael James scored his first career goal in the 20th minute on Omaha's first shot of the match off a cross 20-yards out. ORU would end the half trailing the No. 2 seed 1-0.
Midway through the second half, the Golden Eagles would get the break they had hoped for as Sherwood, Ore. native Davis Chimento redirected a ball into the back of the net for the equalizer off an assist from Baptiste Vandeputte.
Directing the defense from goal was Ben LaCourse who played one of his most complete games of the season. The senior from Tulsa made four saves on the night and batted several balls away from inside the box to lead the Golden Eagles to victory.
"I'm super proud of the kids tonight," said head coach Ryan Bush. "I thought we created the better opportunities on the night and were worthy of the win. It was a great finish from Tyler Hill. We talked about responding to adversity all season and they did just that. I'm proud of our senior leadership for pulling us through some difficult moments during the match."
"Now we will turn and focus on the championship game which is the reason we are here this weekend," Bush continued. "The boys are focused and they will be ready to go on Saturday."
