Golden Eagles Earn Multiple Summit League Awards

DENVER, Colo. – The ORU men's soccer team earned five All-Summit League First Team honors, four all-second team, four all-newcomers, offensive player of the year, goalkeeper of the year, newcomer of the year and coach of the year, it was announced by the league Wednesday evening.

Co-regular season champions Western Illinois and Oral Roberts claimed all five of the individual awards and combined for 13 all-league recipients and seven all-newcomer team spots after a vote by the league's six head coaches.

For the top-seeded Fighting Leathernecks, junior Paul Kirdorf was named the Defensive Player of the Year after leading his team to four-straight victories in league play to close out the season. WIU's defensive unit tightened up down the stretch and Kirdorf's play was a big part of the team's turnaround from an 0-11 start.

For the Golden Eagles, senior midfielder Tanguy Guerineau was named the Offensive Player of the Year after leading the nation in assists with 12 and collecting 18 points during the regular season. True freshman Reed Berry collected Newcomer of the Year honors after leading the league in points with 27 and sharing the league lead in goals with 11.

ORU sophomore Miles Motakef was named the Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the league in goals-against average (0.98) and sharing the league-lead in shutouts with six. Four of those clean sheets came in league play.

ORU head coach Ryan Bush and WIU head coach Dr. Eric Johnson shared the Coach of the Year award, marking just the third time in the league's history that award had co-recipients. Bush led the Golden Eagles to a program record 13 wins during the campaign and their first national ranking since 2005, climbing as high as No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches' poll.

Johnson led quite the turnaround to claim the fifth Summit League Coach of the Year accolade of his career. The Fighting Leathernecks won five of their last seven matches (5-1-1), including four in league play after starting the season with 11-straight losses. The first win during that stretch was a 4-3 triumph over Denver, marking the program's first win over the Pioneers in 11 tries.

Kirdforf, Guerineau, Berry, and Motakef all earned spots on the All-Summit League First Team. Kirdorf was joined by WIU forward Ryan DeBois and goalkeeper Tim Trilk.

The trio of award-winning Golden Eagles was joined by two more ORU teammates to give the program the most first-team recipients with five. That duo includes midfielder Juan Arias and forward Dante Brigida, a junior that shared the league lead in goals with Berry at 11.

Omaha had a pair of first-team recipients as midfielder Marcos Bautista and defender Seth Rinderknecht were both named to the squad. Bautista was a second-team honoree in 2018 and Rinderknecht earned his third career honor (1st; 2017 and 2nd; 2016).

Rounding out the first team was Eastern Illinois defender Edgar Mesa, who earned the same honor in 2018.

The Summit League Second Team is made up of four more Golden Eagles, giving them nine all-league selections. That quartet includes midfielder Jose Castro, defender Wanes Hobat, defender Lucca Rodrigues and defender Gustavo Vargas.

Denver's three all-league selections were on the second team. That trio consists of reigning Newcomer of the Year Callum Stretch, forward Josh Drack and midfielder Jacob Stennson, who was one of two league players to earn their third all-league honor.

Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Jonathan Burke, who shared the league-lead with six shutouts, Western Illinois midfielder Cesar Cosio, Purdue Fort Wayne forward Alex Frank and Omaha midfielder Cole Nelson rounded out that squad.

The Summit League All-Newcomer Team consisted of five all-league recipients as Arias, Berry, Drack, Hobat, and Judd all earned that accolade as well. They were joined by Omaha defender Pep Mateu, Oral Roberts midfielder Vinicius Oliveira, Western Illinois midfielder Daisuke Otsuka and two of his teammates, defender Kyle Owen and midfielder Cameron Territo. Omaha goalkeeper Jeremy Pollard was the final newcomer to be honored on the squad.

The Summit League Championship begins at 1 p.m. (MT) in Denver, Colo. on Thursday with No. 1 seed Western Illinois facing No. 4 Omaha in the first semifinal match of the day. The second semifinal match will include No. 2 seed Oral Roberts taking on No. 3 seed Denver at 4 p.m. (MT). Following Thursday's semifinals, The Summit League Championship will continue on Saturday, Nov. 10 with the championship match kicking off at 3 p.m. (MT).
