TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts men's and women's tennis teams enter Friday's Summit League Championships as one of just two teams to qualify both squads for this weekend's tournament.
The Golden Eagle men are in search of their first tournament championship since 2010 while the women aim for a return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012.
Tournament action begins Friday at 9 a.m. as the ORU men open against No. 2 seed IUPUI at noon. The Golden Eagle women take on top seed Denver at 3 p.m. at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
For the ORU men, four individuals reached double digit wins, led by Michael Sosnowski's 14 victories in singles action and also enters Friday on a four match win streak. Sosnowski played primarily at No. 5 singles, while Jan Pehnec posted 13 wins and Barnabas Koncz and Amar Saletovic earned 12 victories.
Pehnec was a two-time Summit League Player of the Week going 4-1 in Summit League singles while Koncz finished the year at 12-9 and Saletovic tallied a 9-3 record at the No. 3 position.
The Golden Eagle women saw five players reach 10 wins in singles action led at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions by Jovana Antonijevic and Ceijenia Cornelius.
Valentina Gisbert and Brenda Mercado joined Petya Simeonova with 10 wins as well. Simeonova and Antonijevic teamed at No. 1 doubles to go 9-3 this season and 10-3 overall while also posting a 4-1 record during Summit League action.
On the men's side Denver earned the No. 1 seed and opens against the host team 4th-seed Omaha. ORU takes on No. 2 seed IUPUI after the Jaguars edged the Golden Eagles during the regular season with a 4-3 victory.
The women's side of the bracket also shows Denver as the top seed and will take on ORU after a 7-0 win over the Golden Eagles earlier this month. The opposite side of the bracket has No. 2 seed South Dakota and No. 3 South Dakota State battling in the first match. The winner of The Summit League Tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
