Top 5 Finishes Highlight Day One of Summit League Indoor Championships

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Oral Roberts indoor track and field teams started action at the Summit League Indoor Championships Friday, earning multiple top performances in the events completed on day one. The meet is being hosted by South Dakota State inside the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D.

Freshman Mercy Abire led the day's charge as she took second place in the women's long jump event. Matt Owen (pole vault) and Jaden Purnell (long jump) also posted top-five finishes in their events. In addition to these top finishes in the completed events, multiple runners advanced to the finals in their respective events, which will be run Saturday.

News & Notes
- Abire continued her top performances this season in the Summit League Championships. She placed 2nd in the long jump event and took 1st in her heat of the 60 meters preliminaries, landing her a spot in the finals.

- The ORU men advanced seven to the finals of various events Saturday. Israel Nelson placed a top finish in the prelims for the 60-meter hurdles, while Aobakwe Malau and Michael Burns will advance in the 60 meters. The Golden Eagles will have four of the eight finalists in the 200 meters as Omeiz Akerele, D'Khari Hicks, Malau, and Reinhard Ndlovu all advanced.

- The men also had two fourth-place finishers, as Purnell (long jump) and Owen (pole vault) represented the Golden Eagles.

- In addition to Abire, the ORU women advance three others to finals events. Kirsten Burnett will join Abire in the 60 meters, while Tiffany Richeson runs in the 60-meter hurdles and Cameron Hilliard will appear in the 200 meters.
