TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team retired All-American Kevi Luper's No. 15 jersey Saturday afternoon at halftime of the 74-65 shortfall to league leader South Dakota State.
A hot start for the Golden Eagles led to a 14 point lead in the first quarter. After shooting 59 percent in the first, ORU went 1-for-16 from the field in the second. South Dakota State shot 7-for-10 from the field and out-scored ORU 20-3 to take a 33-28 lead at the half. The Jackrabbits went to the free throw line eight times in the first half and connected on seven while ORU didn't see the line. Maya Mayberry went 5-for-11 overall in the first 20 minutes and had 12 points. Tylee Irwin and Myah Selland each had eight points for South Dakota State.
During halftime, the ORU athletic department retired Golden Eagle All-American, Kevi Luper's No. 15 jersey. Luper competed for the Golden Eagles from 2009-2013 and is the only men's or women's division I athlete to lead the nation in points scored and steals in the same season.
The second half started out slow for ORU. The Jackrabbits out-scored the Golden Eagles 26-14 in the third as ORU shot 37 percent from the field. ORU trailed by as much as 24 in the fourth quarter until going on a 15-0 run to cut the deficit to nine. Sarah Garvie came in and went 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to tie her season high 12 points. The Golden Eagles hit five consecutive three-point baskets to make it a nine point game in the final 2:22 of play. ORU out-scored SDSU 23-15 in the fourth, despite the Jackrabbits shooting 50 percent.
The Golden Eagles shot a season low 6 percent in the second quarter for only three points. Mayberry went 10-for-22 overall in the game and 4-for-8 from long range to lead ORU with 24 points. Keni Jo Lippe had 11 points on the day and shot 50 percent overall. ORU's defense forced 16 Jackrabbit turnovers and scored 18 points off of turnovers, while SDSU had seven. It was the season's second low of turnovers for ORU with six.
South Dakota State had four score in double-digits and were led by Summit League preseason Player of the Year, Macy Miller, with 16. Miller went 7-for-9 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. She did not hit a three-point bucket. Tylee Irwin had 15 points, Myah Selland had 13 and Paiton Burckhard scored 12. The Jackrabbits shot 54 percent on the day and 94 percent from the free throw line.
Oral Roberts: Mayberry had 24 points and Lippe had five rebounds.
South Dakota State: Miller scored 16 points and Tagyn Larson grabbed 10 rebounds.
