Location: Case Soccer Complex (Tulsa, Okla.)

TULSA, Okla. – A late second-half surge from the Oral Roberts women's soccer team fell short as the Golden Eagles lost the season opener, 2-1, to Rice University Thursday night at the Case Soccer Complex.

A late penalty kick goal from Jordan Langebartels gave the Golden Eagles a glimmer of hope in the 80th minute, but shortly faded as time expired losing to the Rice Owls 2-1. Langebartels was relentless all night attacking the Owls defense leading the Golden Eagles with three shots on the night.

An early mishap by the Golden Eagles defense led to an easy goal by Rice midfielder Lianne Mananquil in just the fourth minute of the match. Facing adversity early, the Golden Eagles continued to attack finding opportunities with shots from Mackenzi Kirschner and Nicole Gornell in the 18th minute missing just left.

Despite the ORU defense giving up an early goal, true freshman keeper Allison Austin bounced back recording two saves in the first half.

As the Golden Eagles controlled much of the first half, substitutes Amogelang Motau, Brooklyn Eardley and Shayla Padilla provided valuable minutes coming off the bench attacking from the outside.

Coming out of the second half, Rice found its second goal in the 49th minute as it countered the attacking Golden Eagles.

Trailing 2-0, the ORU offense continued to stick to the game plan attacking from the outside as the Golden Eagles recorded four corner kicks in the second half.

Langebartels gave the Golden Eagles some hope as she attacked the Owls defense late in the match scoring on a penalty kick in the 80th minute.

-Defenders Mackenzi Kirschner, Allison Austin and Drishana Pillay each played 80-plus minutes.
-Jordan Langebartels led the Golden Eagles with three shots, while Shannon Smith and Amogelang Motau each had two.

"We have to be better at the beginning of the game," said head coach Roger Bush. "Obviously we gave away a goal early in the first half and second half. We have to do better with the soccer ball, I think we can play in the attack at a higher level and we need the girls to play at a level of confidence that suits their quality."

The Golden Eagles are back in action playing host to Arkansas – Pine Bluff Saturday, Aug., 24 at 7 p.m., at Case Soccer Complex.
