Score: Oral Roberts 0 – Kansas City 2
Record: ORU 3-6-1 – KC – 7-1-2
TULSA, Okla. – In rainy and soggy conditions, the Oral Roberts women's soccer team fell to the Kansas City Roos, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Case Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles starting eleven came out of the first whistle and controlled most of the match within the first 15 minutes, but it wasn't until the 20th minute when ORU saw its first scoring opportunity as Pamela Caballeros blasted a shot from about 25-yards out that nicked the post.
Kansas City quickly countered with an attack of its own as the Roos snuck past the defensive line forcing freshman keeper Allison Austin to come out of her six-yard box, before making a kick save to deny the threat.
ORU would threaten once again in the final minute of the first half as Angie Machado stole it in the Roos half of the field that led to a first touch pass from Marina Solberg to Martha Helsee who fired in a shot from six yards out, before the Kansas City keeper made the save to end any hope of a goal before the half.
Early defensive miscues in the second half would doom Oral Roberts as Kansas City found the back of the net twice within a minute and 17 seconds, starting in the 52nd minute.
Down 2-0 with plenty of time left in the second half, the Golden Eagles would continue to fire shots at the Roos defense as Solberg and Samantha See just missed the target, while Kelli Keller found the target before being denied by the Kansas City keeper.
The Golden Eagles found its last scoring opportunity in the 80th minute as See split the Kansas City defense before sending a cross to a diving Jordan Langebartels who headed it just inches over the cross bar.
- Oral Roberts outshot Kansas City 12-10.
- Allison Austin, along with defenders Gabrielle Abbey and Brooklyn Eardley played all 90 minutes.
- The Golden Eagles fall to 0-5-1 in the gold kits.
Head Coach Roger Bush on…
"Huge credit to Kansas City, they're a great team and a great program. They're a conference champion team and I think that was on display today, they find ways to win games and we have a ton of respect for them."
"We were able to play some of the game on the front foot, we wanted to have the ball and were able to do that but we just weren't able to produce quality chances. Obviously a game can flip in a second and we made a couple of mental errors in the second half in our defending and our attacking that led to the goals. In order to win we have to sort those out and we need the team to play inside of their confidence level."
…upcoming match with Florida Atlantic:
"Florida Atlantic is one of the premier teams in the country and they have had a great season so far, they are very athletic and fast so they will challenge us on pace and we understand that coming into the game. They are another conference champion team and I'm glad we get to face them, it gives us an opportunity to find our benchmark against teams of that caliber. I still believe that if our team can get inside of its confidence level that we can play not just with these teams but we can beat these teams."
The Golden Eagles will host the Florida Atlantic Owls on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
