TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts women's tennis team honored senior Nika Munoz Monday as the Golden Eagles prepare for The Summit League Championships.
Munoz was a three-year letterwinner for the Golden Eagles joining ORU after transferring from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
"Nika was a great asset to the team," said head coach Beverly Dawson. "Her motivation and love for the game was aspiring. She was a joy to have on the team and she will be greatly missed."
Although Munoz appeared in just four matches this season, her teammates recognized her hard work that has helped ORU reach the conference tournament this season and will face top seed Denver on Friday.
"Nika has been a great example of what a teammate should be," said junior teammate Ximena Puentes. "She is always there for us and willing to help us in any way. She is a great friend on and off the court."
A Tulsa native, Munoz played in 16 matches in 2015 with starts at both the No.5 and No. 6 singles position. After going 7-1 and helping FIT reach the NJCAA National Tournament she transferred to ORU in 2013 and picked up her first Division I win over Grambling on February 1, 2014.
However, not just teammates, but coaches alike recognized the hard work put in by Munoz. Former ORU men's tennis player and current graduate assistant Pedro Moreno could easily define what has made Munoz one of the best teammates on the Golden Eagle squad.
"Nika is a selfless person," said Moreno. "She was always thinking about what would be best for the team."
