Tulsa, Okla.
-- The Oral Roberts University women's soccer team claimed the
title of the 2002 Golden Hurricane Classic with Sunday's 4-2
victory over Drury at the University of Tulsa's Donna J. Hardesty
Sports Complex. After finishing the tournament tied with Southwest
Missouri State with a 1-0-1 record, the Golden Eagles were awarded
the tournament crown based upon goal differential.
ORU's Tessa Long (Tulsa, Oklahoma) finished the weekend with three
goals and was named to the all-tournament squad for her
performance. Long was joined on the 2002 Golden Hurricane Classic
All-Tournament team by ORU teammates Erin Hartog (Tulsa, Oklahoma),
Jodi Kirkhuff (Tulsa, Oklahoma), and Martha Owens (Claremore,
Oklahoma).
The Golden Eagles trailed Drury 1-0 after a Carrie Wright goal,
until Hartog found the back of the net from eight yards out and
tied the game at one a piece in the 38th minute. Just two minute's
later Long scored an unassisted goal to put the Golden Eagles up
2-1 going into the locker room at halftime.
ORU went up 3-1 on the Panthers (0-9-1) only 25 seconds into the
second half, as Long took a pass from teammate Jessica Kellogg and
scored third goal of the tournament. Hartog added a second goal of
her own off a rebounded Jessica Kellogg (Tulsa, Oklahoma) shot
attempt, capping a twelve minute span in which the Golden Eagles
recorded four goals.
Drury's Jill Spence narrowed the score to 4-2 with nine minutes,
but the ORU defense, led by Owens and Kirkhuff, would shut the door
from there. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Panthers 14-8 on the
afternoon.
The ORU women's soccer team will return to action at 7:00 p.m.
onThursday night as they host IUPUI in Mid-Continent Conference
action at the ORU Soccer Complex.
