TULSA Western Illinois' Bess Repp scored the lone goal to
spoil Senior Day for Oral Roberts University, defeating the Golden
Eagles 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the ORU Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles (8-8-3, 2-3-3) have already qualified for The
Summit League Tournament, which is to be played next weekend, and
will have a rematch against Western Illinois (15-2-1, 8-0-0) as the
two teams square off in the first round on Friday.
Repp notched the game-winning goal in the 36th minute after
receiving a pass from Misako Inaba. Repp then blasted the ball past
Stef Gurley and just inside the right post.
Gurley, who is one of the five ORU seniors, collected eight saves
in yet another brilliant performance in the net.
The Golden Eagles pressured the Westerwinds defenders in the
second-half, but goalie Julie Remes made several key saves to keep
the home team scoreless.
WIU had a quality chance to extend their one goal lead when the
Westerwinds were given a penalty kick at the 64:21 mark, but Gurley
dove to her right to keep the ball out of the net.
WIU's Meghan Tyk and Remes split time in the box for the
Westerwinds, with Tyk picking up the win with one save in the
first-half.
ORU out-shot WIU by a 20-16 margin. Jessica
Harthcock and
Shakira Duncan led the Golden Eagle offensive
attack with four shots each.
The game time on Friday for the first-round match between ORU and
WIU has not been decided yet.
