ROCHESTER, Mich.
- Western Illinois ended Oral Roberts' women's soccer season
with a goal just 32 seconds left in the match to defeat the Golden
Eagles 2-1 in the first round of The Summit League Championship,
Friday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field.
ORU (8-9-3)
fell behind in the first-half when Western Illinois (16-2-1) scored
in the 40th minute on a goal by Ashley Hoch. Hoch notched her sixth
goal of the season by heading in a cross from Bess Rapp in the box
past goalkeeper Stef Gurley.
The
Westerwinds out-shot the Golden Eagles 5-3 in the first frame, but
Gurley kept the Golden Eagles in the game with three saves.
Emily
Gagnon, a recent second-team all-league selection, gave the
Golden Eagles the equalizer they were looking for in the 49th
minute, just slightly less than four minutes into the second-half.
The Broken Arrow, Okla. native netted her third goal of the year on
an unassisted tally from in the goalie box.
The game
looked to be headed to overtime but Hoch and the Westerwinds went
ahead 2-1 at the 89:28 mark. Just like the first goal for WIU, Hoch
capitalized on a scrum in front of ORU's net by heading in a cross
off a corner kick by Rapp.
Gagnon and
Tara Lomas each recorded two shots to pace the
Golden Eagle offensive attack.
Western
Illinois finished the game with an 11-8 edge in shots. Gurley
recorded five saves in a losing effort, while WIU's Ashley Shugar
had three saves.
Despite
ending the season on a sour note, the Golden Eagles eclipsed last
year's win total of five, playing nine newcomers, including six
freshmen that all saw regular action.
