INDIANAPOLIS -
Summit League champion Oral Roberts University will face
12th-seeded Baylor University on Friday, May 11, 2012 in the
opening round of the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship, it was
announced today.
Because of rain in the Waco area, the match is scheduled to start
at 11 am CT.
ORU is part of a four-team regional pod hosted by Baylor in Waco,
Texas. Tulsa and Stephen F. Austin will battle in the other first
round match on May 11, with the winners to face off one day later
in the second round.
The Golden Eagles (13-5, 8-0 Summit League) booked their NCAA
Tournament trip with a victory at last week's Summit League Women's
Tennis Championship in Kansas City. ORU defeated IPFW in the
championship match, 4-3, with Summit League Player of the Year Iryna Khatsko scoring the clinching point in a
three-set thriller at top flight singles.
Khatsko, fellow seniors Lina Semenova and Kristin Gray and junior Tori Dollar represented ORU on the 2012 All-Summit
League Team. The quartet combined to go 38-3 in Summit League
matches this season.
The NCAA Tournament appearance is the eighth for ORU and their
first since 2009, when they fell to Arkansas in the first
round.
Current senior Ekaterina Kondrashova is the lone remaining member of
ORU's 2009 NCAA qualifier.
ORU and Baylor have faced off twice before in NCAA Tournament play,
with the Bears taking first round victories in 2007 and 2008.
Baylor (23-7, 7-2 Big 12) fell in the championship round of the Big
12 Tournament, 4-3, to Texas A&M. The Bears have three
nationally-ranked singles players: No. 15 Diana Nakic, No. 22 Nina
Secerbegovic and No. 48 Sona Novakova. Secerbegovic and Ema Burgic
combine to form the nation's 12th-ranked doubles tandem.
The winner of the Waco Regional will advance to Athens, Ga., where
the final 16 teams will square off for the National Championship
beginning on May 17.
