NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Much like last season, the
Oral Roberts University women's soccer team kicked off its
conference season with a postponement at Stephen F. Austin.
However, the results this season were much different.
Originally schedule for Friday evening, but postponed due to
field conditions, the Golden Eagles pulled off the upset on
Saturday morning as Mary-Kate
Halsmer scored her second golden goal in consecutive matches to
defeat preseason SLC favorite SFA in overtime, 2-1.
ORU earned its first victory of the conference season as it
moved its record to 6-2 and 1-0 in conference play, while the
Ladyjacks dropped to 5-2 and 0-1 in SLC action.
After the first 45 minutes of play, the match was scoreless,
with the Ladyjacks holding a 8-3 shot advantage over the Golden
Eagles. The home squad broke the scoreless tie in the
49th minute as Megan Dunnigan converted a header off a
corner kick of Melissa Gaudet.
The Golden Eagle defense stood up after the goal, giving their
squad an opportunity to attack. In the 75th minute, Megan
Giles scored her fourth goal of the season as she put the ball
in the back of the net from the top of the box.
With four minutes remaining in the first overtime period,
Halsmer stepped up again, as she controlled a loose ball in front
of the net and slipped it by the SFA keeper for the golden goal.
The game-winner was the eighth of her career and the second
consecutive golden goal after putting on in against Arkansas State
last Sunday.
Maddie
Rhodes earned her second victory of the season between the
posts as she earned a save on a shot from Zuri Prince. Lacey Lee,
who entered in the second half for the Ladyjacks, took the
loss.
Jennifer
Abernathy, Jordan
Parsons and Ashley
Martin also recorded shots on goal for the Golden Eagles.
The victory snaps a five-match losing skid to the
Ladyjacks.
ORU continues its trip in South Texas on Sunday as they visit
Lamar. The match against the Cardinals is scheduled to begin at 1
p.m., weather permitting.
