KANSAS CITY, Mo. –A storybook ending is just what the 2021 Oral Roberts women's soccer (6-10-2, 3-5-1 Summit) program deserved. Trailing Kansas City (6-13, 4-5 Summit) into the 86th minute, the Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals late to claim a come from behind victory as the season drew to a close. The Golden Eagles were able to close the season on a high-note and will look to continue their success when the 2022 season rolls around.
Kansas City jumped out to a 1-0 lead ten minutes into the match to take control throughout the first half.
Brianna McGowan and
Martha Helsee both had good looks at the net on header attempts but were turned away by the Roos keeper. In the final three minutes of the first half, ORU goalkeeper
Kamryn Lunde made a pair of clutch saves, allowing ORU to trail by just one going into halftime.
Throughout the second half, ORU began to make adjustments and bring a furious offensive attack. With less than seven minutes to play, the Golden Eagles made a tactical change, pulling defender
Amy Alexander for an extra attacker in
Sophie Nash. The decision paid dividends almost immediately when Helsee found the upper left corner of the net off of a feed from
Pamela Caballeros.
In the past three games, Helsee has played the hero for the Golden Eagles twice. On Senior Night, Helsee buried the game-winning goal late to sink St. Thomas.
Following Helsee's goal, ORU brought Alexander back onto the pitch for Nash and returned to their normal tactics. Just 80 seconds later, a pair of shot attempts from Caballeros were denied by the Roos keeper but a relentless
Samantha See stayed with the shot attempts and hammered a shot into the back of the net to give ORU the late lead.
Following See's goal, Kansas City earned three throw-ins in the final 59 seconds but were unable to get a shot attempt off, allowing ORU to travel back to Tulsa as 2-1 victors.
