Name, Image and Likeness Legislation Approved

7/1/2021 1:30:00 PM

TULSA, Okla. – With the ever-changing landscape in college athletics, the Oral Roberts athletics department is excited to support new legislation approved regarding Name, Image and Likeness compensation for student-athletes effective July 1, 2021.

On May 28, 2021, Governor Stitt signed legislation approved by the Oklahoma Senate and House permitting student-athletes participating at colleges and universities in the State of Oklahoma to earn compensation from the use of their Name, Image and Likeness without penalty or resulting limitation on their participation.

"ORU athletics embraces its mission to 'Develop Whole Person Champion Leaders' and the new Name, Image and Likeness legislation will provide us another opportunity to achieve this goal," Senior Associate Athletic Director Scott Williams said. "We are working with partners on campus and outside ORU to develop programs that will educate student-athletes on the nuisances of developing, building, promoting and protecting their personal brand. Development through these types of programs will be extremely beneficial to these students as they transition into the professional world following graduation. At the same time, we are also working to ensure we have the necessary programs in place to assist our student-athletes in complying with state and federal laws that govern these rights."

Compensation earned must be commensurate with fair market value for NIL, while all contracts must comply with the written policy of the Institution, Athletic Department and Team Rules. ORU student-athletes also may obtain professional representation by an athlete agent or attorney to help monetize NIL.

There are restrictions in place as student-athletes are not allowed to participate in NIL activities during team activities (competition, practice, meetings, team meals, etc.), cannot use institutional marks and cannot enter into an agreement with a sponsor that conflicts with existing NCAA legislation.
