TULSA, Okla. – Behind Julia Thasaphong's goal in the 86th minute, the Oral Roberts women's soccer team picked up their second straight win as they defeated North Dakota, 1-0, in a hard-fought battle Friday night at the Case Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Golden Eagles are off to their best start in Summit League play (3-1) since 2017 when they opened with a 3-0-1 mark.
The Golden Eagles dominated possession in the opening half as they recorded 12 shots to the Fighting Hawks' four but were unable to find the back of the net as the two sides remained deadlocked at the break.
In the 57th minute, UND was whistled for a handball inside the box, setting up a penalty kick for ORU. Samantha Guzman stepped up to take the kick for the Golden Eagles but sailed it high over the crossbar as the contest remained scoreless.
ORU continued their relentless offensive attack and finally broke through in the 86th minute as Mia Kitterman connected with Thasaphong in the box to give ORU a 1-0 advantage. The freshman's fifth goal of the season came off of her left foot and was sent into the lower left corner of the goal. The Golden Eagle defense did not allow a UND shot in the final four minutes as they finished off their sixth shutout of the year.
Quote from Head Coach Austin Risenhoover
"First of all, I want to give North Dakota a lot of credit as they were definitely difficult to break down and very organized. Chris has done a great job with that team. Before the game, we told the girls to embrace how hard we knew tonight would be and I have to give our kids credit because they fought and competed the whole game. The 25 shots were good and I felt we could've had a couple more but I'm proud of them because they found a way to win."
"The other piece is we've been leaking a bad goal here and there. Tonight we asked them to get a shutout and we did so I'm proud of that aspect of our game. Now it's time to focus on NDSU."
