OMAHA, Neb. – The Oral Roberts women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw but fell in penalty kicks, 3-1, to Omaha Saturday afternoon in the Summit League Championship Final at Caniglia Field.
The Golden Eagles were making their first appearance in the title game since 2016.
Gabrielle Abbey,
Louisa Ramsauer and
Samantha See were named to the Summit League Championship All-Tournament team following the match.
With the wind to their backs, the Mavericks controlled the possession in the opening 45 minutes as they tallied seven shots to ORU's two. In the 44th minute,
Samantha Guzman recorded the lone shot on goal of the half for the Golden Eagles. Ramsauer registered four saves in the first 45 minutes as the two sides headed to the break even at 0-0.
In the second half, ORU turned up the offensive pressure as they totaled six shots, five of which were on target. The Golden Eagles best look in regulation came in the 73rd minute as
Kennedy Langebartels connected on a corner kick but it was punched out by Emma Konsmo. Omaha recorded the final four shots of the half but the ORU defense held strong as the contest headed to overtime.
ORU looked poised to take the lead in the second overtime on a See breakaway but Konsmo came away with the save once again.
Julia Thasaphong got off one more look on goal for the Golden Eagles in the 110th minute but was denied by Konsmo, forcing a penalty kick shootout.
As the two teams entered the shootout, the Golden Eagles had the first opportunity. ORU's first two attempts were saved by Konsmo and following back-to-back makes from Omaha, the Golden Eagles faced a 2-0 deficit. Guzman put the Golden Eagles on the board on their third attempt to cut the deficit to 2-1. Following a third Omaha make, ORU's final attempt went wide left as the Mavericks claimed the match and Summit League Championship.
