WAUKEE, Iowa – Junior Arina Sorokina of the Oral Roberts women's tennis team was tabbed an All-Summit League Honorable Mention, league officials announced Thursday morning.
Sorokina won seven singles matches this season commanding court two for the Golden Eagles. Of her seven singles victories, Sorokina picked up Summit League wins over North Dakota, St. Thomas, Kansas City, and South Dakota. In doubles play, the Moscow, Russia native secured eight wins with seven coming on court one with partner Chara Grammatikaki.
Denver junior Andrea Burguete Betran claimed the Player of the Year award while teammate and sophomore Alice Otis garnered the Newcomer of the Year honor. Beltran is the sixth student-athlete from the Pioneers to win the annual award and seventh time overall a Denver student-athlete claimed the accolade. She compiled a 5-0 league record in singles, all on the top court, and a 5-0 league record in doubles. Overall, she enters the championship with a record of 9-6 in singles action and 12-4 in doubles.
Otis is the sixth Pioneer to take home the Newcomer of the Year award and the third straight overall (Louise Wikander, 2023; Beltran, 2022). Otis is tied for the league lead in singles with a perfect 6-0 record and a 2-2 ledger in doubles. Heading into the championship, she holds overall records of 11-6 in singles and 5-11 in doubles.
For the third straight season, Denver women's head coach Paul Wardlaw secured the Coach of the Year accolade. He guided the Pioneers to their 10th straight Summit League regular season championship title and 10th consecutive unbeaten record in league play at 6-0. During the season, the Pioneers defeated five Power Five schools in Kansas State (4-2), Iowa (4-1), Oregon (4-3), Utah (4-0) and Minnesota (4-3).
The Pioneer women had six individuals earn all-league honors headlined by four-time honoree Britt Pursell. Burguete Beltran collected her third consecutive honor, while Caroline Driscoll, Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Louise Wikander earned their second career all-league nods. Newcomer of the Year Alice Otis received her first career all-league accolade.
Completing the women's all-league team was two-time honoree Nore Heinitz of North Dakota, Bea Havlickova of South Dakota and first-time recipients Zoe Adkins and Paula Arcarons of Omaha, Joana Miralles Cardona of Kansas City and Anna Medvyedyeva of South Dakota.
Honorable mention accolades went to South Dakota's Selena Bird and Amanda de Oliveria, Kansas City's Catherine Chrobak, North Dakota's Sapir Sela, Omaha's Khayli Buckels and Oral Roberts' Arina Sorokina.
