Alick
Musukuma is set to begin his 11th season as the primary assistant coach
for the ORU Cross Country teams, as well as the track squad's distance
runners.
A native of
Zambia, Musukuma supplies a vast amount of personal running success to
the coaching staff. He competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was the
Zambian 800-meter record holder from 1988-90 with a time of 1:46.2. He
also advanced to the semifinals of the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
A certified
Level I, II and III coach, Musukuma has helped guide the Golden Eagle
distance programs to unprecedented heights in the recent past, complete
with a pair of All-Americans (Prince Mumba, Diane Chelimo) during the
2006 outdoor campaign. Musukuma has also coached track All-Americans Mable Kunihira and Shaun Smith.
In all,
Musukuma has led four individuals to All-American honors since 2004,
including Mumba, a three-time NCAA All-American in the men's 800-meter
run. He pieced together the world's #1 ranked (amateur or professional)
4x800-meter relay team during the 2006 outdoor season. The squad set
the season's high water mark as they won the Texas Relay competition,
then followed that up by outlasting the field at the prestigious Penn
Relays.
Musukuma has
also brought a resurgence to the ORU Cross Country programs as of late,
as both squads registered their highest-ever Mid-Con finish in 2005.
The men placed third while the women brought home the conference crown, and won again in 2006.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagle women were All-Americans Faithy
Kamangila, the two-time defending Mid-Con Athlete of the Year, Chelimo,
and Mable Kunihira.
Musukuma
competed collegiately at Blinn Junior College and Oklahoma Baptist
University, claiming All-American honors 13 times in indoor and outdoor
track and cross country along the way. He holds the 1,000-meter indoor
record at Blinn with a time of 2:24. Musukuma graduated from OBU in
1996 with a degree in physical education and recreation administration.
He furthered his education at ORU with a Master's Degree in Christian
School Administration in 1999.
Musukuma was married to his wife Namukale on June 16, 2001 in Lusaka, Zambia. The couple has two sons.
