Alick Musukuma

Alick Musukuma enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Oral Roberts Cross Country program in 2025.

Musukuma returns to the ORU Athletics staff after serving as Head Cross-Country Coach since 2015 at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas. In 2017, the men’s team would place at least fourth in four of their five events, including a pair of second place finishes. UTPB would take third in the Lone Star Conference Championships earning a spot in the NCAA South Central Regional, the first in school history. There they would place 17 out of 28 teams. Prior to UTPB, he was the Head Cross-Country Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach at Missouri State University after serving as an assistant at Oral Roberts.

“Naming Alick Musukuma as our new Head Track & Field/Cross-Country Coach is a true honor,” Athletic Director Tim Johnson said. “Many former ORU student-athletes spoke incredibly high and constantly recommended Alick, among a list of impressive candidates. He has a long list of accomplishments not only in his athletic career, but his coaching career as well – producing All-Americans, NCAA qualifiers and championships among multiple disciplines. We are very excited for him to get started and for the future of our track& field/cross-country programs.”

While serving at Missouri State from 2011-2014, he helped the Bears win the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference indoor championship. He led five Bears to earn All-MVC honors, including Emily Beaver and Erin Edwards. He coached Beaver to be third in Missouri State’s all-time top performers in the mile run and Edwards to be one of the school’s top performers in the 1,000-meter and 5,000-meter dashes.

Before Missouri State, he coached the Zambian National Team to prepare for the All-African Games in Mozambique. He led the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,500-meter, 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runners.

In 1997, he was named assistant track & field coach at Oral Roberts and was named head cross-country coach in 1998. While at ORU, he was a part of 18 Summit League Championships. He coached 28 NCAA qualifiers in cross-country and track & field and 13 All-Americans. He also mentored three Olympians, four World Championship qualifiers, 17 Summit League Athletes of the Year and 50 conference champions. He was named Summit League Cross-Country Coach of the Year in 2005.

Musukuma was a four-time All-American at Blinn College and a five-time All-American at Oklahoma Baptist in the 800 meter and 4x400-meter relay. He competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, for his native country, Zambia. He was the national record-holder in the 800-meter for two years and was named Zambian Sportsman of the Year from 1988-91.
Musukuma earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration from Oklahoma Baptist in 1996 and a master’s from ORU in 1999. He and his wife, Namukale, have five children.

What they are saying about Coach Musukuma:
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Coach Alick since my career as a student-athlete at ORU. He was our Head Distance Coach. Coach Alick, in my opinion, is a great man of God, he works well with athletes and is highly knowledgable and experience in producing many nationally ranked and world-class athletes. I wish Coach Alick all the best as he returns to ORU, now leading the track & field and cross-country programs.” – ORU Olympian & National Champion Andretti Bain

“Coach Alick Mususkuma is one of the best coaches in the world. He helped me and my teammate Shaun Smith to succeed in the 800-meter and qualify several times for NCAA Regionals. He also coached us to win the Texas Relays and Penn Relays. We ran the fastest time in the world under his coaching. He helped me believe in myself and when I was a sophomore, he helped me qualify for the 2004 Olympics and 2005 world championships in Helsinki. Coach Musukuma was not just a coach, he was like a father and brother to many student-athletes. He cared about the needs of student-athletes besides running. He made sure we studied hard and passed our academics. He was always there for us. Congratulations to him, he deserves it.” – ORU Olympian Prince Mumba
