Tulsa, Okla. --Kristin Brady-Atkinson (Broken
Arrow, OK) scored 20 points and three other players scored in
double-figures as Oral Roberts University opened the 2002-03
basketball season with a stunning 67-47 victory over Oklahoma State
in the Bertha Teague Classic, Friday at the Reynolds Center.
Brady-Atkinson, playing in her first game after sitting out last
season, was 7-of-12 from the field and tied a career-high by
hitting six 3-pointers. The senior guard also added five rebounds,
two steals and two assists as ORU picked up its first win over the
Cowgirls since Dec. 20, 1986.
ORU shot just 29.3 percent from the field, but out-hustled the
Cowgirls for 40 minutes. The Golden Eagles grabbed 63 rebounds to
just 37 for OSU, and made 10 3-pointers, including three straight
by Brady-Atkinson late in the first half, turning an eight point
ORU lead into an 28-11 advantage with 3:23 left in the half. ORU
led 33-15 at halftime.
In the second half, ORU built a 27-point lead at 52-25 on
Brady-Atkinson's three with 12:31 left, but OSU closed to within 13
points before ORU pulled away.
April Garcia (Juarez, Mexico) scored 14 points and grabbed 13
rebounds in her ORU debut. The junior center also added four blocks
and two steals in 29 minutes. Leah Cannon (Adelaide, Australia),
another newcomer, had 11 points and nine assists, while Cori
Williston (Tulsa, OK) added 10 points. Stephanie Clark (Artesia,
NM) pulled down 10 rebounds and Claudia Louis (Baton Rouge, LA)
sparked the Golden Eagles with nine rebounds in 16 minutes off the
bench.
The Golden Eagles conclude play in the Bertha Teague Classic when
they face 2002 national runner-up and 25th-ranked Oklahoma, 6 p.m.,
Saturday at the Reynolds Center.
