Tulsa, Okla. --Stephanie Clark scored a
career-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to spark Oral
Roberts to a 74-66 win over crosstown rival Tulsa, helping the
Golden Eagles capture the inaugural Mayor's Cup Trophy in front of
1,664 at the Mabee Center Wednesday evening.
ORU (2-1) trailed for much of the first stanza but closed the first
half with a 14-2 run to take a 38-33 lead at the break. Clark
scored the go-ahead basket to put the Golden Eagles ahead 33-31
with 1:28 remaining, and Leah Cannon followed with a key 3-pointer
less than 30 seconds later to cap ORU's first-half scoring.
Tulsa (2-3), led by Allison Curtin's 32-point, 10-rebound effort,
put together a rally of its own in the second half. The Golden
Hurricane trailed 43-37 before Curtin sparked a 13-1 run with a
pair of 3-pointers, helping Tulsa to its biggest lead of the second
half at 50-44 with 11:48 to play.
At that point, Clark responded for ORU, scoring 13 points in a
game-deciding 20-7 run that put the Golden Eagles ahead for good at
64-57 with 1:15 remaining.
Cori Williston and Cannon combined to make nine of 10 free throws
in the final minute to seal ORU's 24th win in 26 career meetings
with Tulsa. Williston finished with 20 points and eight rebounds,
while Cannon added 14 points, four assists and three steals.
Tulsa, which has never beaten ORU at the Mabee Center in 13 overall
meetings, also got 11 points and eight rebounds from LeAnn Upshaw
and a 10-point, 7-rebound effort from Alyssa Shriver in the
loss.
The Golden Hurricane out-rebounded ORU 50-42, but committed 23
turnovers in the loss. ORU made 27-of-34 at the free throw line,
with 14-of-18 coming in the final 2:29.
