Fayetteville, Ark. -- Senior right side hitter
Patricia Menezes recorded her 1,000th dig tonight as the Oral
Roberts University volleyball team lost to Arkansas (30-22, 30-25,
30-22) at the Morning News Invitational held at the University of
Arkansas.
Menezes had seven digs on the night, giving her 1,006 for her
career. In addition to the seven digs, Menezes had 15 kills and two
block assists.
Sophomore middle blocker Celeste Jones led the team with a .316
hitting percentage (10-4-19) and three block assists. Senior setter
Anna Moreno had 37 set assists, while sophomore libero Becky Dreher
had 12 digs.
The first game started off rocky for the Golden Eagles, as they
lagged behind 18-6. ORU regained composure, bringing the game to
22-17, but could not pass Arkansas, losing 30-22.
Game two brought a much better showing from ORU, improving their
hitting percentage from .139 in game one to .306 in game two. The
second game was close throughout, but Arkansas came up with the
victory 30-25.
ORU came out on fire in the third game, going up 7-2 on the Lady
'Backs. Arkansas battled back and pulled in front of ORU 20-16 on
seven straight points. Arkansas won game three 30-22.
ORU moves to 5-3 on the season. Their other losses were to #5 Long
Beach State and #6 Florida. Arkansas improves to 8-1 on the
season.
The ORU volleyball team is back in action tomorrow as they face No.
17 Colorado State at noon and Louisville, who received AVCA top 25
votes this week, at 5 p.m. in the final day of the Morning News
Invitational.
