Columbia, S.C. -- April Syko moved up the ORU
career charts in kills today in a 3-0 loss to South Carolina
(30-19, 30-27, 30-28). Syko's six kills give her 931 for her career
and move her into seventh place on the ORU career charts.
Syko, the 6' 1" outside hitter from Winnipeg, Manitoba, had six
kills, seven digs and a block assist in today's match. Senior right
side hitter Patricia Menezes had 10 digs, nine kills and two block
assists.
Senior setter Anna Moreno had 24 assists, while sophomore outside
hitter Becky Brunelle had nine digs, eight kills, two service aces
and a block solo.
Game one started slow for the Golden Eagles as they trailed 2-9
early on. The first game ended with a 19-30 loss. ORU had a .053
hitting percentage (9-7-38) in the first game, compared to South
Carolina's .273 (19-7-44).
Game two was much better for the Golden Eagles as they hit .308
(15-3-39), but they lost the game 27-30. Syko made her move up the
ORU career charts in kills during game two on a kill that pulled
the Golden Eagles to within one, 26-27.
ORU almost came up with a win in game three. A kill by Brunelle put
ORU up 28-24, but South Carolina proceeded to go on a 6-0 rally to
win 28-30.
ORU evens its record at 6-6, while South Carolina moves to 8-3.
The ORU volleyball team is back in action Saturday, October 28 at
the ORU Aerobics Center for its home and conference opener against
UMKC at 7 p.m.
Other Notables: April Syko's six kills today moved her into seventh
place on the ORU all-time career charts in kills. Syko has a career
total of 931 kills.
