Provo, Utah -- The Oral Roberts University
volleyball team was victorious in its opening match of the Brigham
Young University Mizuno Classic today as it beat Brigham Young
University in three games (30-28, 30-27, 30-16).
ORU (3-1 overall) is off to its best start since 1999, when the
team started the season 4-1. Brigham Young, unofficially ranked #33
in the latest AVCA poll, falls to 1-4 on the season.
"The girls held great composure today through some tight points,"
head coach Amy Farber Knowles said. "We had an all-around great
team effort like I know we are capable of."
Patricia Menezes led the team with 14 kills and added nine digs,
three block assists and two service aces. Anna Moreno had an
outstanding performance for the Golden Eagles with 38 set assists,
six services aces and eight digs. Becky Dreher led the defense with
18 digs at the libero position.
"Our passing was amazing," Farber Knowles said. "Becky Dreher had
some awesome digs and we served really well. We're getting stronger
each match."
Lindsey Engel reached double digits in kills (10) and had six digs.
Celeste Jones had six block assists and six kills, while April Syko
had 14 digs. Ivana Placko collected seven kills and two service
aces.
The ORU volleyball team is back in action tomorrow as they face #6
Florida at 1 p.m. CT and Wake Forest at 6 p.m. CT.
Other notables: Moreno moved up the Mid-Continent Conference career
charts in service aces. Her career total of 132 aces ranks her
seventh in Mid-Con history. Menezes also moved up to seventh on the
Mid-Con career charts in kills with 1,284.
