Kansas City, Mo. --Sammi Knapic scored a
career-high 23 points in leading UMKC to a 73-62 win over Oral
Roberts, Saturday at Swinney Rec Center.
The loss drops ORU to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in Mid-Continent
Conference play. UMKC improves to 8-9 and 3-2.
The loss also denied ORU head coach Jerry Finkbeiner a chance to
tie Dixie Woodall for first on the ORU career coaching victories
list.
The Golden Eagles owned a 10-3 less than four minutes into the
game, but UMKC free throws and an 8-minute offensive dry spell put
ORU into a 28-24 hole at halftime. ORU also committed 11 first half
turnovers and UMKC went 7-of-8 from the line, compared to just
1-of-2 for ORU.
Stephanie Clark hit back-to-back baskets for ORU and April Garcia
followed with a 3-pointer as the Golden Eagles tied the score at
31-31 with 17:53 to play. But ORU never regained the lead as Knapic
and fellow freshman Carlai Moore combined for 26 second half
points.
Leah Cannon led ORU with 15 points, hitting 4-of-10 shots from the
field, including a pair of 3-pointers. Cannon also was 5-of-6 from
the line and handed out eight assists. Clark finished with 11
points and six rebounds, while Garcia had 10 points, eight boards
and four blocks.
UMKC helped itself at the line, hitting 22-of-25 free throws. Moore
finished with 18 points while Katie Houlehan had 14 points and 10
assists.
Up next for ORU is a non-conference tilt with Texas-Pan American,
7:05 p.m., Tuesday at the Mabee Center.
