The Oral Roberts University volleyball team came up short in its
bid for a seventh consecutive Mid-Continent Conference
Championship. Tournament host Valparaiso University stopped ORU
3-2. The game scores were 30-27, 30-25, 19-30, 22-30, 15-13.
ORU led game two 9-6 before Valparaiso posted a 15-1 run en route
to a 21-10 lead. ORU promptly closed the gap to 26-24 with an 11-1
run of its own before dropping the game 30-25. Game three was tied
at 16 until an 8-0 ORU run gave the Golden Eagles a 24-16 lead that
would not be surrendered.
Freshman outside hitter Ori Zuzic led ORU with 26 kills and four
service aces while contributing 12 digs. Her two-day total of 52
kills set a new Mid-Con Tournament record. Junior Becky Dreher came
up with 32 digs. That total represents the third highest total in
the Mid-Con tournament record books. Dreher contributed ten kills
before switching from outside hitter to libero after game two.
Freshman setter Maura Cicala tossed up a Mid-Con Tournament record
67 assists
Lauren Moulton led Valparaiso with 18 kills and sent back a Mid-Con
Tournament record 11 blocks. Tournament MVP Cyndi Norman totaled 49
assists. Mid-Con Libero of the Year Sara Silcox led the Crusaders
with 19 digs.
Valparaiso totaled another Mid-Con Tournament record with 20
blocks. ORU had eight blocks. 14 service errors haunted ORU, while
Valparaiso committed just six miscues.
ORU dropped to 21-13, while Valparaiso climbed to 27-7.
ORU will conclude its season Saturday, November 29, when the Golden
Eagles face off against the University of Arkansas at 7:00 p.m.
